Caroline Néron’s Spring 2012 presentation was the kind of runway show that I probably fantasized about as a child in the ‘90s, but haven’t expected to see since. There was a live singer, a live drum beat, a wind machine, and a story of slinking goddesses falling to earth. 
Whole-body chains were worn with stacked bracelets, rings, earrings, and metal-fringed epaulettes—my personal favourite detail. Three goddess-specific looks emerged on the runway, each very similar but with slightly different colouring—but the pièce de résistance was the final look: the lone model who walked out in body chains with wing-like strings of gems and beads attached to jeweled cuffs garnered audible gasps. Gasps, yes, but we’d like to know just what kind of gasps those were.

Billy Idol‘s “Hot in the City” played on soundtrack as Donatella Versace‘s modern mermaids paraded the catwalk in under-the-sea neoprene gold studded scuba jackets, white hot short suits, and bandeau brassieres with slim pencil skirts in pretty pastel, sea shell and sea-horse prints. Save for the pageant worthy finale gowns, it was short, sexy and ultra feminine—certainly fit for a new-age Ariel.

After Raf Simons’ Spring 2011 collection, I didn’t think it could get any better, but it did.  The highlights: bright primary colours, cocoon shapes, low-slung back belts, geometric print hoods on ’50s-inspired ski knits, lean stirrup pants that buckled into booties, red lips and turquoise eyeliner.
